The Antonine Plague, also known as the Plague of Galen, was one of the earliest recorded pandemics in human history, devastating the Roman Empire during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Thought to be smallpox or measles, this highly contagious disease was introduced to Rome by soldiers returning from military campaigns in the Near East.
